If you've never seen that error message, you're very lucky and do not need UnlockMe! More likely, you've seen it and have been unable to figure out what process has a lock on your file, usually because it's part of Window's kernel or a background process such as a virus scanner.

With UnlockMe, you can easily determine what's locking your file so you can try and close it. If you can't close it, UnlockMe will automatically unlock it for you, or allow you to terminate the offending process (very useful for getting rid of virus infections).

There are a few similar apps already available, but either do not have all the features of UnlockMe or come bundled with malware or adware (which technically is a form of malware). Usage

Simply right-click the locked file or folder and select "UnlockMe" from the context menu. UnlockMe will show all programs that have a lock on the file or folder. The recommended action is to then swap to the program and attempt to close the lock (eg, by closing the file ro program). If you're unable to do this, press Unlock or Unlock All to auotmatically release the lock or Terminate to immediately stop the program.

UnlockMe will automatically close when all locks have been released.

Alternatively, launch UnlockMe from the Start menu and browse to the file or folder you want to unlock. You can also select to view all locks by all programs if you're feeling inquisitive.
